Thanks to Oliver Laux for filming and Tim Zahn for the live mix: During Musikmesse 2017 I met two excellent German groove drummers at the Marriott in Frankfurt: Jan Delay drummer Jost Nickel and solo artist Anika Nilles spent some time with me and we had an awesome doubletalk on the art of merging feeling, soul, simplicity and groove into the universally understandable language of drumming. To Be in the Zone.
Wie kommt man dahin? – Jost Nickel streift dann auch sehr, sehr lustig die Frage, wie ein Drumsolo aufgebaut sein sollte, seiner Meinung nach. Es darf sich dabei für ihn nicht um „random notes“ handeln, es muss schon irgendeine Art von Dramatik oder Wohlüberlegung dabei sein. Na gut. Nobody’s perfect, erklärt uns Anika und erzählt von ihren fails vor Drummern, die sich nun freuen, dass Du failst, weil Du bist der Plusquamperfekt des Drummatischen. Jost Nickel denkt das dann weiter. “There are no wrong notes in jazz: only notes in the wrong places.” „If You hit A wrong note, it’s the next note that you play that determines if it’s good or bad.
